Which KDP formatting software should you choose?
Choose by your starting file, required output and most demanding page layout.
- Finished novel or straightforward nonfiction manuscript: shortlist Atticus and Vellum. Consider Kindle Create if your budget is zero and you do not need complex tables or footnotes.
- Finished manuscript with a tight budget: Word or LibreOffice can produce a print PDF, but you must configure margins, section breaks and pagination yourself.
- Workbooks, complex tables or image-heavy pages: consider InDesign for page-level control. Canva can help with visual pages and covers, but requires manual checks of margins, pagination and wrap dimensions.
- Starting a new book rather than importing one: consider yumo if you need research, drafting, formatting, cover files and listing text in one workflow.
- Already writing in Scrivener: test its Compile output before buying another application. Use a separate finishing tool if the export cannot reproduce your required tables, worksheets or image placement.
Disclosure: this blog is published by yumo, an independent tool that is not affiliated with Amazon. The comparison separates its new-book workflow from tools designed to format existing manuscripts.
If you have not chosen a topic, you can check one niche with the free niche finder. New accounts receive five starter credits; a scan costs one credit and compares live demand with competition. It does not guarantee profitability.
For an existing manuscript, skip research tools and test your hardest chapter first.
How do the main formatting tools compare?
Match the tool to the job: manuscript formatting, individual page design or book production from a new idea. Inspect the exported file before committing.
| Tool | Best fit | Platform or access | Outputs and strengths | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle Create | Simple, text-heavy books | Windows and Mac; free | KPF publishing workflow, chapter styling and navigation | Not a general-purpose print PDF or wrap-cover designer |
| Atticus | Authors formatting existing manuscripts across devices | Browser-based; paid | Print PDF and EPUB; reusable book styling | Test tables, worksheets and intricate layouts before committing |
| Vellum | Mac authors formatting prose books | Mac; paid export licenses | EPUB; print PDF with the print-capable license | Print export requires the appropriate license; not a complex page-design tool |
| Microsoft Word | Authors comfortable with document styles | Desktop Windows and Mac; paid options | DOCX and PDF; section and margin controls | Check for inconsistent styles and misplaced section breaks |
| LibreOffice Writer | Authors who need free PDF export | Windows, Mac and Linux; free | Document editing and PDF export | Imported Word formatting can shift; inspect every section |
| Adobe InDesign | Designers handling complex interiors | Windows and Mac; subscription | Page-level print design and EPUB workflows | Requires learning page-layout controls; ebook output needs separate review |
| Canva | Visual covers and individually designed pages | Browser and apps; free and paid tiers | Visual page design and PDF export | Facing-page margins, pagination and wrap dimensions need manual attention |
| Scrivener | Writers who want drafting and compiling together | Desktop Windows and Mac; paid | Multiple manuscript and ebook compile formats | Test Compile settings against your required layout |
| yumo | Authors creating a new book inside one workflow | Credit-based plans | KDP-ready interior PDF, wrap cover PDF, EPUB and listing text | Does not import or repair an existing manuscript |
Before paying, confirm current device support and that the exact license includes print output, not just ebook export. A free download does not necessarily include free exports.
For Kindle Create, Amazon recommends simple, text-heavy paperbacks. Its paperback workflow has limitations involving tables and footnotes. Check Amazon's paperback formatting guidance and Kindle Create's supported features against your manuscript.
Evaluate a chapter opening, a long paragraph, an image caption and your most complicated page, not just template screenshots.
What must a KDP formatting tool get right?
For a paperback, prepare an interior file and a separate cover file. The interior contains front matter, main text and back matter. The cover combines the back, spine and front into one wrap.
Check these five connected measurements:
- Trim: the finished size after cutting, such as 6 × 9 inches.
- Mirrored margins: inside and outside margins that switch sides on facing pages.
- Gutter: inside clearance that keeps text out of the binding.
- Bleed: artwork extending beyond the trim edge to accommodate cutting variation.
- Spine: cover width calculated from final page count and the selected paper and ink combination.
Changing trim can alter line wrapping and page count. A changed page count affects spine width and may move the book into a different minimum-gutter band. Recheck both after repagination.
Set trim and print options first. Format the interior, establish the final page count, then build the cover.
Choose trim for the reader's task
Test 6 × 9 inches for nonfiction or 8.5 × 11 inches for worksheets that need more writing space. Neither is a universal requirement. Confirm that KDP supports your chosen size with the intended binding, ink, paper and page count.
Compare production costs before locking the layout. Amazon's printing-cost guidance identifies trim, page count, ink, paper and marketplace as cost factors. Bleed itself does not add a separate printing charge.
Use the formatting and print-files hub for guidance on individual settings.
How do mirrored margins and gutter work?
For a left-to-right paperback, the inside margin sits on the left of a right-hand page and on the right of a left-hand page. Mirroring switches it automatically.
Do not use fixed left and right margins when the bound edge needs different clearance from the outside edge.
Set the inside margin using the final page count:
| Final page count | Minimum inside margin, including gutter |
|---|---|
| 24–150 | 0.375 in / 9.6 mm |
| 151–300 | 0.5 in / 12.7 mm |
| 301–500 | 0.625 in / 15.9 mm |
| 501–700 | 0.75 in / 19.1 mm |
| 701–828 | 0.875 in / 22.3 mm |
Not every print configuration supports 828 pages. Supported page counts depend on your printing options; check Amazon's trim, bleed and margin specifications for your setup.
Worked example: a 220-page paperback
A 220-page book requires at least a 0.5-inch inside margin. Choosing 0.625 inches adds clearance above that minimum; assess the result in a physical proof.
Enter the value according to how your software handles gutter:
- One inside-margin field: enter the total desired inside clearance.
- Inside margin plus an additive gutter field: set the values so their sum equals your intended clearance.
- Automatic gutter: verify the result after the final page count is known.
Do not enter the full minimum in both additive fields.
If revisions move a 150-page book to 152 pages, the minimum inside margin rises from 0.375 to 0.5 inches. Recheck pagination after adjusting it, then regenerate the cover.
For a workbook, test whether the reader can write near the binding without crowding their hand. Meeting the minimum does not establish writing comfort.
When do you need bleed, and what size should the PDF be?
Use bleed when an image, background or other printed element must reach the finished page edge. If every printed element stays within margins on a white page, you do not need interior bleed.
For a KDP paperback interior, bleed adds 0.125 inches at the outside edge and 0.125 inches at both the top and bottom. Do not add a bleed strip at the binding edge.
| Finished trim | Interior without bleed | Interior with bleed |
|---|---|---|
| 5 × 8 in | 5 × 8 in | 5.125 × 8.25 in |
| 6 × 9 in | 6 × 9 in | 6.125 × 9.25 in |
| 8.5 × 11 in | 8.5 × 11 in | 8.625 × 11.25 in |
A 6 × 9-inch book with an edge-to-edge chapter illustration needs a 6.125 × 9.25-inch interior PDF. Extend the illustration into the bleed area. Enlarging only the page leaves a white strip beyond the artwork.
If any interior page needs bleed, export the whole interior with bleed dimensions. Select the matching bleed setting during KDP upload.
KDP's minimum top, bottom and outside margins are 0.25 inches without bleed and 0.375 inches with bleed. Keep text inside the safe content area, not in the area intended for trimming. Use KDP Margins and Bleed Requirements Explained to distinguish page edges, trim lines and safe areas.
What if your PDF has crop marks? Export again without them. Printer's marks can cause incorrect file dimensions or appear as unwanted content.
How should book cover design and interior formatting connect?
Build the cover from the finished interior's page count. Word count cannot determine spine width: fonts, trim, spacing and front matter all affect pagination.
For a standard paperback wrap:
- Cover width = twice the trim width + spine width + 0.25 inches of total outer bleed.
- Cover height = trim height + 0.25 inches of total bleed.
Worked example: 200 pages on white paper
For a black-ink paperback on white paper, calculate spine width as page count × 0.002252 inches.
At 200 pages:
- Spine: 200 × 0.002252 = 0.4504 inches.
- For 6 × 9-inch trim, wrap width: 12 + 0.4504 + 0.25 = 12.7004 inches.
- Wrap height: 9 + 0.25 = 9.25 inches.
Black-ink cream paper uses 0.0025 inches per page, giving the same 200-page book a 0.5-inch spine. Use the corresponding calculation for other paper and ink combinations.
Enter your final specifications in the official KDP cover calculator. Do not carry a multiplier between projects without checking the paper and ink settings. Hardcover construction requires a different template; the paperback formula does not apply.
KDP requires at least 79 pages for paperback spine text. Above that threshold, keep lettering within the template's safe area. Leave the designated barcode area clear if Amazon will add the barcode.
If editing adds 20 pages to the white-paper example, the spine grows by 0.04504 inches. Regenerate the template rather than stretching the old cover by eye.
Use How to Make a KDP Cover with Correct Spine Width when preparing specifications for a designer.
What makes fonts, images and PDFs print-ready?
Check the PDF's properties and rendered pages. Opening successfully does not confirm correct dimensions, embedded fonts or adequate image resolution.
Fonts and text
Test body text at 10–12 points for prose; this is a testing range, not an Amazon requirement. The right size depends on the typeface and intended reader. Print sample pages at actual size before choosing, and use a consistent heading hierarchy.
Embed fonts in the PDF and confirm that their licenses permit the intended use and embedding. Inspect italic characters, accented letters and special symbols after export. Font substitution can change line endings and pagination.
Use paragraph styles instead of repeated spaces, tabs and empty paragraphs. For ordinary prose, choose first-line indents or deliberate paragraph spacing rather than combining them accidentally. Check for isolated lines at page tops or bottoms and headings separated from the text they introduce.
Images and PDF export
Aim for 300 dpi at the final printed size. A 1,800-pixel-wide image placed at six inches is 300 dpi; stretching it to nine inches reduces it to 200 dpi. Changing a resolution label does not add detail.
Export the interior as single pages, not reader spreads. Remove password protection and printer's marks. Verify every page's dimensions, font embedding and the rendering of transparent effects.
For grayscale interiors, inspect color artwork in grayscale. If contrasting colors become similar gray tones, revise the artwork so labels and important details remain distinguishable.
Check page numbers, running heads, blank pages and chapter openings. Use the Print Ready PDF Checklist for KDP Success for the final file review.
Where does yumo fit, and what does it cost?
Choose yumo for a new-book workflow rather than manuscript repair. It combines niche research, a table of contents, chapter drafting in the author's voice, styling and a proofread pass.
Styling options include worksheets, writing lines, checklists and illustrations. Outputs include a KDP-ready interior PDF with mirrored margins and page-count-based gutter; a wrap cover PDF with spine width based on the actual page count and dimensions that include bleed; an EPUB; and listing text covering the title, description and seven keyword slots.
It does not import or repair an existing manuscript. If your book is already in a finished Word document, choose a tool that accepts that manuscript.
| Plan or purchase | Price | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Pro Publisher | $40.80 per month | 80 |
| One-Time Pass | $54.40 one-time | 80 |
| Light Recharge | $9.99 one-time | 10 |
| Publisher Boost | $24.99 one-time | 30 |
| High-Volume Fill | $59.99 one-time | 80 |
Budget five credits for a text book bundle, one for a chapter, one for an illustration, three for a wrap cover and one for a listing. Requesting a text book bundle, a wrap cover and a listing uses nine credits. Your total depends on additional requests: separately requested chapters and illustrations each add one credit. Nine credits is not a universal finished-book budget.
Before export, yumo checks metadata for trademark words and keyword-stuffed subtitles, and checks page counts and repeated interiors. These checks do not establish rights clearance or guarantee Amazon acceptance. It also prompts the author to complete Amazon's AI disclosure. Answer KDP's questions according to your actual use of generated content.
You remain responsible for account setup, upload, rights, pricing and the publish decision. Verify factual claims, permissions and final pages even after the proofread pass.
If you are still choosing a topic, try the free niche finder before building the book. Compare demand and competition; do not treat the scan as a sales forecast.
Do you need separate formatting for Kindle and print?
Yes. A print PDF fixes each page. A reflowable Kindle ebook changes with the reader's font size, screen and device settings.
For print, set trim, margins, headers and page numbers. For a reflowable ebook, check heading structure, navigation, reading order and adaptable images. Do not expect print page numbers or positioned text boxes to translate directly.
Even if your formatter exports both formats, inspect each output separately. See Ebook vs Print: Formatting Differences Uncovered for the layout differences.
Test the EPUB in Kindle Previewer at different font sizes, including large text. Check the navigation table of contents, chapter starts, links, image captions, lists and tables. Run an EPUB checker such as EPUBCheck as well; technical validation does not replace visual review.
For a simple Kindle Create project, KPF is part of Amazon's supported publishing workflow. Check your required distribution formats before choosing it: KPF support does not mean the application supplies a portable print PDF or EPUB.
What if your book is mostly writing lines or exercises? Prioritize print. A reflowable ebook does not provide the same space for handwritten answers. If you publish an ebook edition, adapt the exercises rather than relying on PDF conversion.
What is the simplest step-by-step KDP formatting guide?
Follow this order so the cover uses the final interior measurements:
- Identify the book type. Separate prose, complex nonfiction, workbooks and repetitive low-content interiors. Journals, planners and notebooks are common low-content examples; coloring and puzzle books are generally not. Check the classification against your actual interior.
- Choose print specifications. Select binding, ink, paper, trim and bleed before detailed layout. Confirm that the configuration supports the expected page count.
- Clean the manuscript. Standardize headings, paragraphs, lists and scene breaks. Remove manual spacing used to imitate alignment.
- Format representative pages. Include a chapter opening, a dense text page and the hardest image, worksheet or table.
- Set mirrored margins and gutter. Apply the page-count band, then test whether reading or writing requires extra inside space.
- Complete front and back matter. Include every page you intend to print before calculating the cover.
- Export and inspect the interior. Verify dimensions, fonts, images, pagination and blank pages. Recheck the gutter if the page count changed.
- Create the cover from that page count. Use the correct KDP template and keep text within its safe areas.
- Upload and preview each edition. Match KDP settings to the exported files. Resolve warnings and inspect the page images.
- Order and review a physical proof. Check binding clearance, small text, image quality, writing space and cover placement before deciding to publish.
For low-content books, Amazon does not require an ISBN. Use your own or publish without one; these books are not eligible for a free KDP ISBN or Expanded Distribution. Check Amazon's low-content guidance before setup.
Save approved styles and export settings for later titles, but recalculate each book's gutter and cover. A reusable template does not make page counts or spine widths interchangeable.
What should you do when a file or proof looks wrong?
Check the likely cause before switching software.
| Problem | Check first | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong interior dimensions | PDF page size versus trim and bleed selection | Export at the intended dimensions; match the upload settings |
| Text too close to the binding | Mirroring, final page count and total inside margin | Correct the inside clearance and repaginate |
| White sliver beside edge artwork | Artwork extension into bleed | Extend the image beyond trim rather than just enlarging the page |
| Cover size mismatch | Page count, paper, ink and binding | Generate a fresh template for the final configuration |
| Missing characters or changed wrapping | Font embedding and substitution | Use an embeddable font and inspect a fresh export |
| Ebook layout breaks at large text sizes | Fixed positioning and manual spacing | Replace fixed positioning and manual spacing with paragraph and heading styles |
If the uploaded file is correct but the proof differs, check whether manufacturing variation explains the result. Amazon notes that full-bleed color books may receive about 0.13 inches of additional inside white space for binding. Consult its proof and author-copy guidance for expected variation and when to report a printing problem.
Avoid hairline borders or spine lettering that depend on exact cut or fold alignment. Keep important content within the template's safe areas, even when the preview appears precisely aligned.
Before buying another formatter, export your hardest chapter or representative worksheet from a candidate tool and inspect it at actual size.
